Bowling Facility Development

The UK tenpin bowling industry is currently worth an estimated £286 million with almost two thirds of the adult population (c 30 million people) having experience or an interest in tenpin bowling.

Alliance Leisure developed the first public sector indoor tenpin bowling centre in 2006 at Hailsham Leisure Centre. The four court indoor sports hall was converted to a 6 lane boutique tenpin bowling facility with a children’s softplay and interactive area with café developed on the first floor. The facility has consistently out-performed projections converting an annual sports hall income of £70,000 into a new income stream in excess of £400,000.

Such has been the success of this facility other local authorities have now explored similar business models and Slough Community Leisure in partnership with Alliance leisure opened a 16 lane ten pin bowling venue in mid-September 2010. The site was an under-utilised tennis centre and has been converted at a cost of £1.6m.

With many sports halls now standing empty for large periods of the day leisure officers are looking at more innovative commercial activities to help sustain provision and tenpin bowling can be a profitable solution attracting new users to the facilities.
