“The Sport and Active Lifestyles department at Wakefield Council undertook a complete fitness business review in 2009. In an ideal world, Sport and Active Lifestyles would have employed sales staff to support the gym refurbishment programme. Given the restraints of the local authority and decreasing budgets, this was impossible.
“Sport and Active Lifestyles looked at many options in terms of increasing sales. There was also a need to train current staff in modern, professional leisure protocols due to the lack of focus on sales, retention and current trends from past management.
“It was obvious from the start that Alliance Leisure had experience of working with local authorities especially where there was a lack of skills when dealing with enquiries and sales. The different level of support and the bespoke training that was provided by Alliance has supported Sport and Active Lifestyles in changing its overriding culture. The training, in very challenging environments, is easy for staff to understand and gives them something to think about. There are some older staff members within the department that are resistant to change. So far there has been little resistance and all sites are on board with the new working practices.
“The support that Alliance Leisure has given Sport and Active Lifestyles has been excellent and they have helped implement systems that would have taken four times as long if senior management had taken their own training. The service is professional and definitely value for money.”
